Testing

Resting Metabolic Rate Testing

Resting metabolic rate testing measures how many calories your body burns at rest, by analyzing your breath. NorthStar uses it to build plans on facts, not estimates.

Diagnostic testing is planned to begin in January 2027 with in-person appointments in Edina. Telehealth appointments are anticipated to begin in late November 2026 for select patients. Please contact our office for additional information regarding eligibility and availability.

What it is

A simple, non-invasive test (indirect calorimetry) that measures how many calories your body burns at rest by analyzing the oxygen you use and carbon dioxide you produce — your true metabolic baseline.

Who benefits

Anyone whose weight won't respond to standard calorie estimates, people who suspect a “slow metabolism,” and those who want a nutrition plan built on their real numbers rather than a formula.

Why it matters

Calorie estimates from formulas can be off by hundreds of calories. Measuring your actual resting metabolism removes the guesswork that causes plans to stall — and reveals true metabolic adaptation.

How NorthStar approaches this differently

Measure first. Treat the cause.

We measure rather than estimate, and we re-test to track metabolic adaptation over time. That lets us adjust your plan before a plateau, and confirm that your metabolism is being protected during weight loss.

Understand what is limiting you.
