Metabolic Adaptation: Why Diets Stall
Almost everyone who loses weight eventually hits a wall. That plateau isn't a lack of effort — it's metabolic adaptation, your body's built-in defense of its weight.
What happens when you lose weight
As you lose fat, two things happen: your resting metabolism falls (a smaller body needs less energy, sometimes by more than size alone predicts), and appetite hormones shift to increase hunger. Together these narrow the gap you worked to create, and progress slows.
It's biology, not failure
This response evolved to protect against starvation, and it's remarkably effective. Understanding it removes the shame from a stall and replaces it with a strategy — because adaptation can be measured and managed.
What actually helps
Protecting muscle through resistance training and adequate protein blunts the drop in metabolic rate. Measuring your resting metabolic rate over time shows how much adaptation has occurred so the plan can be adjusted before progress stops.
See where you stand
Education is the first step. A metabolic evaluation turns these concepts into your numbers — and a plan built around them.
One interconnected picture
Understand what is limiting you.
