Body Composition (DEXA)
DEXA measures fat, muscle, and bone precisely — including visceral fat. NorthStar uses it to set a true baseline and track real progress.
Diagnostic testing is planned to begin in January 2027 with in-person appointments in Edina. Telehealth appointments are anticipated to begin in late November 2026 for select patients. Please contact our office for additional information regarding eligibility and availability.
What it is
DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is a precise scan that measures fat, lean muscle, and bone — including visceral fat around the organs — far beyond what a scale or BMI can tell you.
Who benefits
Anyone losing or gaining weight who wants to know what kind of tissue is changing, people concerned about muscle or bone loss, and those tracking a metabolic or performance plan.
Why it matters
Weight alone is misleading — it can't tell fat from muscle. DEXA reveals visceral fat (a key metabolic risk) and muscle mass (a key to metabolism and aging), turning vague progress into clear numbers.
Measure first. Treat the cause.
We use DEXA as a baseline and a feedback tool, not a one-time number. Repeat scans show whether a plan is protecting muscle and reducing the fat that matters — so we can adjust with evidence.
One interconnected picture
Understand what is limiting you.
