Understanding Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance sits beneath many of the problems patients bring to a metabolic clinic. Understanding it explains why weight, energy, and long-term risk are so often connected.

What insulin does

After you eat, insulin moves fuel from your blood into cells for use or storage. When cells respond less to insulin, the body compensates by making more. Blood sugar can stay normal for years while insulin levels climb — and high insulin promotes fat storage and hunger.

Why it develops quietly

Because blood sugar is often the last thing to change, standard screening can miss insulin resistance for a long time. Earlier signals — abdominal weight gain, post-meal crashes, and body composition — frequently reveal it sooner. Learn how we look earlier in our insulin resistance evaluation.

The good news: it responds

Insulin sensitivity improves with more muscle, regular movement, and better nutrition — and with medication when appropriate. Caught early, the trajectory toward prediabetes can often be changed.

From understanding to action

See where you stand

Education is the first step. A metabolic evaluation turns these concepts into your numbers — and a plan built around them.

Understand what is limiting you.
